Good morning, Oakland. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 12th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hundreds of demonstrators gathered at Fruitvale Plaza on Tuesday, June 10 to show solidarity with Los Angeles protesters against ICE arrests—union and faith leaders prayed with the crowd and urged the community to unite against federal government actions.  San Francisco Chronicle

CRIME NEWS

  • A CHP video from May 28 shows officers chasing 19-year-old Eric Hernandez-Garcia near 102nd Ave. and International Blvd before his car lost control—hitting a fire hydrant, a tree and a parked car and ultimately killing Oakland teacher Dr. Marvin Boomer—as local authorities continue their investigation with Hernandez-Garcia now facing multiple felony charges.  ABC7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, Oakland City Council passed a two-year $4.2 billion budget that closed a $265 million gap and funded key services (keeping 25 firehouses open and 678 police officers employed) while cutting high-paid positions and removing the cultural affairs manager role. Local artists and cultural leaders said the budget cuts would hurt the city's arts and tourism.  The Oaklandside
  • Vincent Genovese from San Leandro received a May 14 letter canceling his voting rights when his information was mistakenly linked to a criminal case, and he worked with officials and police to resolve the error. Today, officials confirmed that a clerical mistake—not identity theft—was to blame and restored his rights while they investigate the misidentification.  San Francisco Chronicle
  • Oakland officials moved forward with a pilot program to install 18 speed cameras — two in North Oakland, five in downtown, four near Fruitvale, one on MacArthur, and six near 73rd and 98th avenues. The city council will vote next week on the plan, and if approved, a 60-day period of warnings will begin before fines start by year’s end.  ABC7
