EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parents at an Oakland elementary school discovered a racial slur from a 1940s Montclarion article in the Montclair Elementary yearbook, and PTA president Sloane Young apologized and ordered reprints. The PTA provided stickers and educational materials to cover the offensive word—hoping to prompt necessary discussions about race.  KTVU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A dead gray whale washed up on Montara Beach over the weekend—marking the 14th death of the year—and was the fifth such case in the past week. Scientists from the Marine Mammal Center and California Academy of Sciences are investigating the cause and tracking rising whale sightings in the Bay.  KTVU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alameda County's new district attorney Ursula Jones Dickson is pulling back plans to change death row sentences that came after a review showed racial bias in jury selection. Her office filed motions to undo these plans in cases like Grayland Winbush and Giles Albert Nadey—now a judge will soon decide on the pending motions.  The Oaklandside
  • Caltrans maintenance crews conducted emergency repairs on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Monday after broken concrete was found on the upper deck’s western end, leading to the closure of two lanes in each direction. Marin County California Highway Patrol estimated work continued until 8 p.m.—drivers were advised to take alternate routes to avoid delays.  KTVU

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new West Oakland shelter is offering harm reduction services for unhoused residents—giving free clean needles and test strips—after crews moved 70 people from the city’s largest encampment. Officials say the shelter will combine housing and health care to help residents adjust to indoor living.  The Oaklandside

  • On Monday, June 2, Oakland Roots fired head coach Gavin Glinton and assistant coach Jesse Cormier because the team did not meet expectations in nearly three months of play — the club said a new head coach will be named soon.  KTVU
