EDUCATION NEWS

  • An Oakland parent-led group held an open meeting of the OUSD Multi-Stakeholder Engagement Group (MSEG is pronounced 'message') yesterday at Fremont High School from 5:30 to 8 p.m. to gather community input on the district’s long-term restructuring after exiting receivership; dinner was provided.  The Oaklandside
  • Oakland Unified School District must ban student cell phone use by July 1 under a new state law, with the draft policy under review on June 14 and a board vote on June 24. The policy permits emergency and approved exceptions (for bell-to-bell enforcement) to lessen classroom distractions.  The Oaklandside

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Record heat and dry weather melted the Sierra Nevada snowpack early, but EBMUD says its reservoirs were 96% full this week due to a solid rainy season - the agency expects supplies will remain adequate across the East Bay as the forecast stays dry until fall.  The Oaklandside

SPORTS NEWS

  • Team Australia arrived in the Bay Area ahead of the FIFA World Cup and has set up at the Oakland Roots training facility in Alameda for an open practice Wednesday — coach Tony Popovic confirmed the 26-man roster includes three MLS players and the squad will face Turkiye on June 13.  KTVU
