CRIME NEWS

  • A person died in Oakland after a California Highway Patrol chase near East 21st Street and 11th Avenue on May 28th—police and the CHP are investigating the incident.  KTVU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On May 29, Oakland schools ended the year as outgoing superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell held her final press conference at the new West Oakland headquarters—she did not explain her early departure. She highlighted her work in raising graduation rates and boosting district finances while urging community involvement in choosing an interim leader set for July 1.  The Oaklandside

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Oakland City Council is moving forward with a new $4.4 billion budget plan that cuts over 400 city jobs and reduces police overtime to close a projected gap—estimated at up to $130 million annually. At a town hall on May 28, residents voiced concern about public safety while officials plan to raise revenue through a new sales tax and bonds for affordable housing and street paving.  KTVU
  • Oakland leaders are drafting the next two-year budget to balance a $2.3 billion annual income with shifting revenue streams—property and business tax collections are slightly above target while funds from real estate, hotel, and sales taxes are below budget.
