Good morning, Oakland. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 25th of May.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A WalletHub report released on May 23rd ranked several Bay Area cities among the worst places to start a business based on factors like labor costs and office space affordability—San Jose placed 99th, Fremont 97th, San Francisco 91st, and Oakland 85th. The report shows that high business costs are a major challenge for startups in the region.  KTVU

CRIME NEWS

  • Donovan Wright, 28, was arrested in Oakland on suspicion of assault and drug possession after he shot at a person who fired a BB gun at a vehicle during an April Castro Valley shooting — detectives later found more guns and some cocaine in his home — and his arraignment will be set for Tuesday at 9 a.m.  San Francisco Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tropa Magica will perform live at Oakland’s Thee Stork Club on May 28 at 8pm as part of their Para Bailar Y Triplar Tour. The band mixes Peruvian cumbia guitar rhythms with 1990s grunge and a psychedelic twist—drawing fans eager to experience their unique sound.  East Bay Express

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials announced Friday that crews cleared a large homeless encampment on East 12th Street near 14th Avenue, relocating 70 residents to Mandela House and enrolling six in a medical respite program. Crews will now remove trash and install barriers to discourage reoccupation—while some local residents and business owners welcome the cleanup, advocates note that rapid removal led to lost personal items and stress the need for more shelter space.  KTVU

HEALTH NEWS

  • Experts say that the AirPods hearing test provides a quick, at-home way to check for mild hearing loss but is not a substitute for a complete medical evaluation. Sara Rittweger and Payal Anand explain that factors like poor fit or background noise can affect its accuracy — patients should see a professional if their results do not match their experiences.  San Francisco Chronicle
