COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On May 21, Alameda cyclists gathered for the Ride of Silence to honor those injured or killed while biking by riding seven miles silently, starting and ending on Park Street—local riders paid tribute to lost loved ones and raised cycling safety awareness.  KTVU
  • Four local nonprofits will invest $100 million in a 40-block area in East Oakland to create jobs, build affordable housing and repurpose properties for small business uses and paid youth internships over a 10-year period.  San Francisco Chronicle

CRIME NEWS

  • Oakland Police arrested a suspect after a standoff following a shooting at around 11:30 a.m. on May 22 on the 1700 block of International Boulevard — a victim with a gunshot wound was taken to the hospital and remains in critical condition.  KTVU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At a special meeting Wednesday night, the Oakland Unified School Board reversed the planned cuts to afterschool, before-school and summer programs after over 40 parents, students and childcare providers protested a March decision to cut services by up to 80%—board members have yet to resolve the $106 million budget gap.  KTVU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new California law—Proposition 36—has raised penalties for drug and theft crimes in Alameda County, with over 160 cases filed so far as courts begin using the measure. Critics say the law is disproportionately affecting Black residents—despite them being a small portion of the local population—and are calling for a review of its impacts.  The Oaklandside
  • Rebecca Kaplan ended her 17-year service on Oakland City Council on Tuesday after serving as a temporary steward for District 2 until Charlene Wang was sworn in. She was known for her work on finance & keeping community projects like the Coliseum strong.  The Oaklandside

  • Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green earned his fifth first-team NBA All-Defensive honor on May 22—making him only the 13th player with nine-plus call-ups—while Warriors swingman Moses Moody underwent successful right thumb surgery and is expected to fully recover before training camp.  San Francisco Chronicle
