Good morning, Oakland. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 16th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Bike to Wherever Day, thousands of Oakland riders gathered on Thursday to ride to work, school, and meet each other while stopping at energizer stations for bike repairs and fun. City officials and bike advocates met at City Hall (including Councilmember Zac Unger) to push for safer bike lanes (and better road connections) as part of the growing call for improved cycling infrastructure.  The Oaklandside

ECONOMY NEWS

  • In Oakland, 170 small businesses received a total of $2.2M in grants from the East Bay Community Foundation to help overcome the challenges of the pandemic—each business was given between $5,000 and $25,000 based on need and equity priorities. The grants aim to support these businesses amid a $280 million budget deficit facing Oakland over the next two years.  ABC7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • California community colleges lost $13 million as bots using fake identities enrolled to collect aid meant for real students. At Laney College in Oakland, teacher Eleni Gastis now asks for a video introduction—an idea to spot fake enrollments—while state officials plan to add a fee and extra ID checks.  San Francisco Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in East Oakland attended a forum at the 81st Avenue Library to ask Interim Mayor Kevin Jenkins about his $4.2 billion plan for cleaner streets, better safety, and help with homelessness. City leaders said the plan will add police officers and adjust services (cutting 400 staff positions with only 12 expected layoffs) while needing voter approval and steady federal support.  The Oaklandside

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Warriors clinched a 121-116 win with strong showings from Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler, sparking a surge in betting activity in Oakland bars and on mobile apps despite California's ban on legal sports betting.  East Bay Express
  • Alysa Liu, the 19-year-old world champion figure skater from Oakland, has returned to a relaxed routine at the Oakland Ice Center after winning gold in March — her practice uses a pop playlist that shows she loves skating again. She will perform in a Stars On Ice show on May 18 at San Jose’s SAP Center — a sign that she is easing back into competition on her own terms.  The Oaklandside
  • Stephen Curry has been cleared for shooting drills and light on-court workouts after a strained left hamstring—he will be evaluated for a Game 6 appearance if the Warriors force an extra game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.  KTVU
  • On May 14, the Warriors lost to Minnesota as Jonathan Kuminga scored 26 points on 23 shots and Brandin Podziemski added 28 while supporting the team with rebounds and assists. Their strong play as young players has set up a busy summer, as the team will decide on Kuminga’s free agency options + plan for next season.  San Francisco Chronicle
