  • Bay Area florists reported that tariffs on imported blooms increased costs for key flowers—forcing some Oakland shops to raise prices by up to $10 on specialty bouquets this past Mother's Day as customers still paid extra for quality.  KTVU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • East Bay Regional Park District issued a rattlesnake advisory on May 8 to warn park visitors that the reptiles are becoming more active as warm weather returns. Officials advise residents to stay on trails and check their surroundings carefully to avoid encountering a rattlesnake—if bitten, callers should seek immediate medical help.  The Oaklandside

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oakland officials proposed a budget that would end all public financing for the 2026 elections (the first time in over 20 years) if no amendments are made. Some council members have introduced an ordinance to extend limited financing through 2028 (with increased contribution limits) while the Public Ethics Commission warns its two-staff team may not handle 152 open complaints.  The Oaklandside
  • Gov. Newsom released a legislative framework and over $3.3 billion to help local officials clear homeless encampments and expand housing and treatment facilities. Oakland, with nearly 3,500 unsheltered residents and only 1,300 temporary beds, now faces plans to shut down a major encampment—leaving some residents uncertain about their next shelter options.  San Francisco Chronicle
