- ➤ A hit-and-run driver fatally struck 49-year-old Oakland resident Elmo Ballard Jr. on Sunday just before 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of 18th Street and San Pablo Avenue while he rode his electric mobility scooter—his grieving family gathered at the scene on Thursday and said they expect the driver to be brought to justice. - ➤ An Oakland documentary about the Hintil Kuʻu Ca preschool, started during the Alcatraz occupation and kept open by community support, will premiere on May 18 at 1 p.m. at the Oakland Museum of California (a panel discussion with former students will follow) as it shows how the school helped preserve Native culture.
