COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After an April 29 event, Curbside Creamery owner Tory Wentworth announced on Instagram (May 6) that his business will not join future Taste of Temescal events because proceeds now support Temescal Telegraph BID programs rather than Oakland public schools, and local businesses have reacted with mixed views.  The Oaklandside
  • Gov. Newsom announced a state program that will provide 400 free diapers to every newborn at selected hospitals serving many Medi-Cal patients starting this summer — a partnership with nonprofit Baby2Baby designed to ease daily expenses for new parents.  KTVU

  • Local restaurants are closing, with Oken (in Rockridge) ending service on May 31 and Richmond’s Caspers set to close on May 16; Clove and Hoof is reported permanently closed and CoCo Noir will close after Sunday, July 5 while Masa Ramen remains temporarily closed until January.  The Oaklandside
  • Arthur Mac's Big Snack will open its third and largest branch this fall in downtown Hayward inside a restored 1990s Class A BART car — a project that cost $2 million and is expected to boost local business, according to city leaders.  KTVU

CULTURE NEWS

  • Organizers of Oakland First Fridays (run by nonprofit KONO) say the street festival is threatened after sponsors withdrew support over unfair links to violence hours later. City officials will add patrols and safety steps while local leaders plan new events to boost community positivity.  KTVU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Oakland families can use the Black Youth Development Book (a searchable guide) to find youth programs happening summer and year-round. Available online and in print at Marcus Books and community events, the guide was produced by the Brotherhood of Elders Network to help parents plan enriching activities.  Oakland Voices
  • Oakland education leaders rallied in Sacramento on Thursday to urge Gov. Newsom and state lawmakers to restore full Prop 98 funding after a delay of $5.6 billion threatens Oakland Unified with a $27 million shortfall amid ongoing budget cuts.  The Oaklandside
  • Julia Morgan School for Girls has filed plans with the city to move from its Mills College location to a historic building by Lake Merritt at 525 Bellevue Avenue (former Bellevue Club).
