GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The California Department of Insurance has not released records showing the business purpose for Commissioner Ricardo Lara's taxpayer-funded trips since 2019 — more than 30 trips are missing key documents. Journalists have repeatedly requested the details — but officials have not provided a clear explanation.  ABC7
  • Oakland mayor–elect Barbara Lee said in her first sit‐down on May 6 that she is ready to address challenges like a budget deficit, public safety needs, and community divides—she worked with interim Mayor Kevin Jenkins on a budget plan and plans to secure federal dollars before her swearing‐in later this month.  KTVU
  • City unions urged Oakland to rein in police overtime spending after the mayor’s new two-year budget set $33.6 million for this fiscal year and $38.2 million for next. The unions’ report shows overtime hours have grown sharply over the years and warns that unchecked costs may worsen the city’s budget — officials must now review and enforce audit recommendations.  The Oaklandside
