Good morning, Oakland. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 7th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community members held a fundraiser at Que Rico Nightclub—targeted after its 11th burglary in four years when thieves stole $25,000 worth of alcohol, an ATM, and caused significant damage on 15th Street—selling tacos at 6 p.m. and launching a GoFundMe for security upgrades.  KTVU
  • YaVette Holts is hosting a festival on May 8 at Frank Ogawa Plaza to celebrate Small Business Week—featuring dinner, a DJ, dancing, and local vendors that help boost downtown business. City staff will also be present from 3 to 7 p.m. to share resources and support small business owners.  The Oaklandside

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, interim Mayor Kevin Jenkins proposed a two-year city budget that will restore funding for six police academy classes, cut police overtime and eliminate 400 city jobs. The plan, supported by Mayor-Elect Barbara Lee and a passed voter measure that kept several firehouses open, shows that public safety remains a top priority as a new administration prepares to take office — with city council approval still pending.  ABC7
  • Oakland officials use social media to show their work and connect with residents. They rely mostly on Instagram—where they share short videos and live chats—to explain local issues like public safety and city contracts.  The Oaklandside

SPORTS NEWS

  • After beating the Rockets in seven games, the Warriors won their playoff series and now face the Timberwolves to challenge star Anthony Edwards. Analysts say the team’s strong shooting and defense (led by Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Kevon Looney) could help them overcome Minnesota’s powerful front court.  San Francisco Chronicle
  • After beating the Rockets on May 5, the Warriors prepare to face the Timberwolves in a best-of-seven series starting Tuesday at Target Center—though the team is seen as underdogs despite its recent win. They plan to use smart play led by Curry and Butler while Minnesota relies on its size and strong defense.  San Francisco Chronicle
