ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Bandna Bhatti, a 21-year-old UC Berkeley data science major nearing graduation, fell from a metal stairway at the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity on Piedmont Avenue during Cal Day on April 19 and is now paralyzed from the waist down while her family stays at Highland Hospital in Oakland.  KTVU

ECONOMY NEWS

  • State data from the California Department of Housing and Community Development showed that in all nine Bay Area counties a household of four earning a six-figure income can still be classified as low income—Santa Clara County caps the limit at about $159K while in four counties a single person earning over $100K qualifies as low income, highlighting ongoing housing affordability challenges.  KTVU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Civil rights attorneys said the Oakland school board did not follow state law in a closed meeting on April 9 that planned to end superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell’s job early. They argued that the board broke the Brown Act and urged officials to be open with the community—important for restoring trust in school leadership.  San Francisco Chronicle
  • The director of Oakland Head Start — Diveena Cooppan — was placed on administrative leave on April 25 without warning, leaving staff and advocates worried about the program’s grant funding. City officials are reviewing the situation and council members plan to investigate the leadership change at upcoming meetings.  The Oaklandside
