- ➤ A 30‑year‑old man, Jeremy Morton, was charged Monday with assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse for attacking a Chinatown market worker and a 71‑year‑old man who tried to stop him on April 10 at Won Kee Grocery—Oakland police arrested him after receiving a tip and he faces up to 19 years in prison if convicted. - ➤ Two men, 18-year-old Markus Williams and 19-year-old Chidera Ojeh, were charged Monday with robbery, attempted robbery, commercial burglary, and vandalism for smash-and-grab thefts across Oakland, including a 7-Eleven near Lake Merritt that was attacked Thursday and Friday — officials say they face up to 10 years in prison if convicted. - ➤ Brown pelicans are being rescued from unusual spots across the Bay Area—rescued from places like Napa County, Cotati and Daly City—as people bring in the weakened birds to the International Bird Rescue in Fairfield. Experts say warmer ocean water is causing fish to dive deeper, leaving the pelicans unable to hunt properly. ABC7

- ➤ The Oakland Police Department will soon use only its private — encrypted channels for radio communication, ending the public's access to police scanners that newsrooms and citizens had long monitored. KTVU
- ➤ The Oakland City Auditor reported that the city paid over $1.6 million in excess overtime to transportation and public works workers since 2018 because of a flawed formula+ city leaders are now hiring an outside expert to review the overtime rules before making changes as Oakland faces a large budget deficit. - ➤ A group led by former city administrator Steven Falk is proposing a measure to change Oakland's government by amending the city charter—voters will decide the final plan after reforms would shift roles for the mayor and city attorney and introduce a council-appointed city manager.
