ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Parents of Piedmont teen Krysta Tsukahara are suing the driver's estate after the Cybertruck crash during Thanksgiving break killed her and two friends—seeking answers about the night of the fatal accident.  ABC7

CRIME NEWS

  • Overnight on April 25th, thieves broke into the 7-Eleven at Grand Avenue and Mandana Boulevard near Lake Merritt—attacking a clerk and throwing a rock through the door as police investigated a series of smash-and-grab thefts across Oakland.  KTVU

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gov Newsom released data on April 24th showing that if California were its own country its $1.4 trillion economy would rank fourth in the world behind the U.S., China & Germany while experts warned that tariffs and slow permitting for new housing and factories could slow future growth.  KTVU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • W. Kamau Bell, an Oakland comedian and filmmaker, donated his $1 million Celebrity Jeopardy winnings to benefit Oakland schools. He announced the gift at Castlemont High on April 25th — the donation will fund Donors Choose projects to help teachers get needed supplies.  KTVU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A California Department of Fish and Wildlife grant was awarded to Friends of Sausal Creek to restore native plants at Fern Ravine in Joaquin Miller Park. The project will expand the restoration area from 8.5 acres to 50 acres over three years—boosting the park’s native growth and visitor experience.  The Oaklandside
  • Today, Rotary Nature Center Friends hosts the annual Lake Merritt BioBlitz at the Sailboat House, 568 Bellevue Avenue, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.+ anyone with a smartphone can help record local species for the City Nature Challenge while volunteers guide on-site identifications and a wrapup session runs at the Junior Center of Art and Science from 1 to 3 p.m.  The Oaklandside

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Charlene Wang, who grew up in Chinatown with her grandparents, was elected as Oakland's District 2 city council member after winning 59% of the vote — her opponent Kara Murray Badal conceded. She said she will boost police staffing, clear encampments, and renegotiate waste management contracts — and she had a meeting with Oakland Police Chief Floyd Mitchell on Friday.  KTVU
  • City staff in Oakland reported that the finance department has delayed the second series of Measure U bonds, leaving many street paving projects in limbo as funds remain unavailable. Without the new bonds, the city will likely postpone more contracts—potentially delaying $20 million worth of road and affordable housing projects.  The Oaklandside
