EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ W. Kamau Bell visited Castlemont High School on April 24th—announcing that a portion of his Celebrity Jeopardy winnings will fund over 200 projects in Oakland schools, including more than 20 at Castlemont. ABC7
- ➤ Oakland schools got a boost when comedian W. Kamau Bell donated $1 million from Celebrity Jeopardy! to fund all $150,000 in Donors Choose projects across local classrooms—19 of which are at Castlemont High School. He made the announcement on Thursday morning to help ease the burden on teachers who often spend their own money for supplies. The Oaklandside
- ➤ The Oakland Unified School District voted behind closed doors on April 23 to end longtime Superintendent Kyla Johnson Trammell's contract even though she had led the district out of receivership. She will finish the school year and an interim superintendent will be named on July 1. KTVU

- ➤ Last April, Mac Muir of the Community Police Review Agency filed a complaint saying he was retaliated against for investigating police misconduct in Oakland. The complaint said Commissioner Regina Jackson texted him 'you don't give the rat the cheese' amid internal conflict. The Oaklandside
- ➤ A draft study by an independent consulting firm says Oakland needs 277 more police officers—bringing the total to 877—to properly patrol the city and investigate crimes. Interim Mayor Kevin Jenkins will share new staffing plans in a budget proposal set to be released May 1. The Oaklandside
