ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Four teenage girls died and two teens were injured in an SUV crash on April 18th in West Marin County—14-year-old Marley Barclay, now at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland, recalled that she and her friends wore seatbelts before a car veered into their lane causing the SUV to hit a tree, and her family confirmed no alcohol was involved as officials investigate the incident.  ABC7

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Goodwill San Francisco Bay laid off 72 workers at its Oakland facility and closed other centers as part of a major restructuring to address dire financial issues—workers expressed anger and worry about their future job security. CEO Tim O’Neil said the cuts were necessary while the nonprofit prepares to invest $12 million and pursue new leases to expand its operations.  SFGate

  • Jerome Jernigan LaDay—a 44-year-old security guard and beloved community member—was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while riding his bicycle on International Boulevard at 78th Avenue in East Oakland on April 22 as he was riding home from work.  KTVU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Interim Mayor Jenkins fired former chief of staff Leigh Hanson on April 6—she was set to be the city's key witness in defending against ex-police chief LeRonne Armstrong's wrongful termination lawsuit—and this change may affect Oakland's legal defense ahead of the May 8 hearing.  The Oaklandside
  • Starting at 5 p.m. on April 29, California residents will be able to apply for the E-Bike Incentive Project to win a $2K voucher for a new e-bike, with only 1,000 applications accepted. The program will set income limits (up to 300% of the Federal Poverty Level) for eligibility and will randomly choose winners from a virtual waiting room that closes at 6 p.m.  The Oaklandside
  • After all ballots were counted on April 21, Barbara Lee secured a 52% vote share against Loren Taylor and spoke at the Chamber of Commerce to outline plans to improve public safety and address a $130 million budget gap. She met with interim Mayor Kevin Jenkins to discuss a quick transition and announced that her first 100 days will focus on forming partnerships with police and business leaders—her transition team includes representatives from the Chamber and Alameda County Labor Council.  KTVU
