BUSINESS NEWS

  • Spinning Dough at 2935 Market St. in Oakland will close on April 20 after eight years of serving ube and longanisa pizzas, owner Jeff Chin announced. He thanked customers and noted the restaurant nearly closed in 2023 after he suffered a heart attack.  The Oaklandside

CRIME NEWS

  • A 22-year-old Oakland man was charged with the murder of his Santa Rita Jail cellmate after the victim was found unresponsive with visible injuries on March 18—Alameda County Sheriff's Office said the suspect was arrested on April 11.  KTVU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Oakland teachers are threatening to strike because the school district has not provided enough details about its plans for budget cuts and deficits; union members will vote on Thursday on whether to hold a one-day strike on May 1 (the district now projects a deficit drop from $95 million to about $12 million after cutting nearly 100 jobs).  KTVU

  • Early votes from Oakland’s special mayoral election show a slim lead for Loren Taylor over Barbara Lee as counting continues. Taylor’s team used many door knocks and phone calls while Lee built a strong group of supporters and unveiled a 10-point plan—and the contest remains too close to call.  The Oaklandside

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Brandy Collins faced problems in her old apartment with leaks, termites, and mold, and her landlord raised the rent without proper notice. She then used the city’s Rent Adjustment Program—filing her claim online and reaching a settlement that led her to move out and receive $10,000 in a cash-for-keys deal.  The Oaklandside
  • A Bay Area appraiser paid a couple $75,000 and watched the ABC7 News documentary 'Our America: Lowballed' as part of a settlement over alleged racial discrimination. The settlement came after the family complained about low home valuations—Clear Capital then retrained its staff to help prevent future bias.  ABC7

SPORTS NEWS

  • Oakland Ballers are converting a retired BART car gifted from BART into a new concession stand at Raimondi Park. The historic car—originally set aside for the A's—will be stored off-site for a year before being unveiled next season and used on May 20.  ABC7
  • The Warriors plan to include Jonathan Kuminga in the playoff series against the Rockets—his 21.3 point average against Houston this season makes him a valuable option. Coach Steve Kerr said his role will depend on lineup changes and his restricted free-agent status as the team prepares for the best-of-seven matchup.  San Francisco Chronicle
