  • Recent reports confirm that several local eateries have closed; Ike’s on College in Oakland, Juice Appeal and Sistory Thai Kitchen in Berkeley, plus Wrap n Roll near the UC Berkeley campus have stopped operating (per tipsters). CULTURE NEWS

  • Children's Fairyland will host its first adults-only Mad Tea Party on Friday, April 24 at its park in Oakland, featuring an Alice in Wonderland themed night with live DJ music, dancing, cocktails, local food vendors and rides (tickets are $28 for general admission and $23 for members).  KTVU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Following the state’s push for universal pre-kindergarten, Oakland saw more 4-year-olds in transitional kindergarten while the share of 3-year-olds in subsidized preschools increased. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials approved a pilot program to use AI drones to spot illegal dumping in Oakland. The project will soon begin testing in targeted areas to help reduce waste accumulation.  SFGate
  • Residents in Temescal heard a whooshing sound at 11 p.m. last Thursday from a gas leak at Webster and 43rd Streets; PG&E arrived shortly after — working two hours to stop the leak — and councilmember Zac Unger is scheduling a community meeting to review the incident.  The Oaklandside
  • Gov. Newsom announced $520 million in automatic utility credits for millions of California households this month to lower energy bills statewide, and the CPUC will vote on April 30 to shift electric credits to peak summer months.  KTVU
  • The City Council will revisit fines for property owners who cut 38 oak trees on Claremont Avenue between 2021 and 2022; some officials favor enforcing nearly $1 million while others back a reduced penalty as the owners plan to build on the lot & neighbors remain concerned.  The Oaklandside
