  • After a fire destroyed its original location last July, East Bay Booksellers rebuilt and was nominated yesterday for Publishers Weekly’s Bookstore of the Year award for its support for small indie publishers and community events—owner Brad Johnson said the nomination validated the store’s revival efforts.  San Francisco Chronicle

  • Supporters of Taylor and Lee held campaign events in Oakland Tuesday night as early returns showed a tight mayoral race—Taylor backers praised his practical ideas while Lee supporters celebrated her clear record—and community leaders urged unity as the ballot count continued.  The Oaklandside
  • Early tallies show 64% of Oakland voters support Measure A to raise the sales tax from 10.25% to 10.75% and generate up to $30 million annually for police and fire services—vote totals may change as more ballots are counted.  The Oaklandside
  • An independent firm from PFM Consulting Solutions LLC found that based on 2022 data Oakland's police needed 877 officers but had only 678 for FY 2025. The report revealed a gap of 199 officers due to a budget deficit-stopped hiring that leaves the force short for long-term safety goals.  KTVU
