Good morning, Oakland. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 13th of April.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oakland voters will choose a new mayor next week in a tight race between Rep. Barbara Lee and ex-City Council Member Loren Taylor as they face challenges with crime, homelessness, and trash. Lee unveiled a 100-day plan focused on public safety and city services while Taylor proposed a business advisory board and tax breaks for small businesses—voters hope one of these plans will fix the city’s issues.  San Francisco Chronicle
  • State Sen. Aisha Wahab now heads the Senate Housing Committee and held a hearing last month to discuss reforms aimed at speeding up housing production for Californians. Assembly Member Buffy Wicks is proposing a bill that would remove most infill housing from environmental review while Wahab insists changes must still protect community safety — guarding against hazards like floods and wildfires.  San Francisco Chronicle

  • Oakland Ballers, a community-led minor league team born from local investment and local pride, is entering its second season after 2,500 fans raised $2 million (a key boost) and local stars joined the effort.
