CRIME NEWS

  • A person was shot and killed inside a car near a local school on the 8100 block of Fontaine Street on Friday afternoon—officers arrived around 12:45 p.m. after reports of a shooting and are now investigating the homicide with no suspect identified.  KTVU

CULTURE NEWS

  • Michael Burawoy, the renowned UC Berkeley sociologist and supporter of protest—killed in February near Lake Merritt—will be honored with a public memorial on Sunday at 1 p.m.  The Oaklandside

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Six candidates are vying for Oakland’s District 2 City Council seat in a special election on April 15 to fill the vacancy left when former Council President Nikki Fortunato Bas moved to the Alameda County Board. The race covers areas from Lakeshore to Chinatown and Jack London Square—voters will use ranked-choice voting as candidates propose measures to improve public safety, housing, and local business support.  KTVU
  • With less than a week until the mayoral election in Oakland, candidates are ramping up their campaigns by airing attack ads, holding press conferences, and forming new alliances as independent groups and unions spend heavily. Registrar Tim Dupuis said his team is ready for election night—voting centers will close at 8 p.m. and hourly results will be released with a definitive update expected on April 25.  The Oaklandside
  • In Oakland, two leading mayoral candidates—Barbara Lee and Loren Taylor—unveiled public safety plans five days before the special election, emphasizing crime reduction as a top priority. Lee presented a 10-point plan to boost public-private investments while Taylor proposed a Business Advisory Board to help shape policy.  KTVU

HEALTH NEWS

  • An Oakland man who received a free COVID test at Newark’s AFC Urgent Care said he got a call threatening collections even though a restraining order had stopped billing since February; the urgent care said the call was a mistake (billing stopped Jan. 20) and Trovato Medical Group filed for bankruptcy, which may further complicate reimbursements. This issue adds to concerns over post-pandemic billing errors.  ABC7
