Good morning, Oakland. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 11th of April.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Goodwill said it will permanently close its Oakland warehouse — which is already closed to the public — and terminate 72 workers while laying off 18 in San Francisco to improve operations. Affected staff may apply for jobs at other Goodwill stores as the company plans to open new locations soon.  KTVU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Alameda County Board of Education voted in a 5—2 decision to deny Oakland Charter High School’s renewal because of low student achievement and fiscal concerns, so it will close when its charter expires on June 30. LPS Oakland R&D was approved for two more years with a memorandum that sets new conditions.  The Oaklandside

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oakland deputy mayor LaNiece Jones disclosed on April 1 that she holds a 12.5% stake worth about $1,300 in African American Sports and Entertainment Group LLC — one of the companies negotiating to buy the Coliseum property. City officials said she has not been involved in the deal talks, though some advise she reconsider her dual roles.  The Oaklandside
  • The City of Oakland halted its Summer Food Service Program — which fed thousands of children free meals — because funds from the sugar-sweetened beverage tax were reallocated to cover a $130 million deficit, so meals will not be served after school ends on May 29. More than 45 community and faith-based sites were notified and are urged to connect with local food banks to help affected families.  KTVU
  • Loren Taylor served on Oakland City Council from 2018 to 2022 and his record is under review ahead of his run for mayor on April 15. His votes on police spending, role in creating the city's homeless camp policy and efforts to boost local business — such as launching an East Oakland entrepreneurship program — show how he may lead Oakland if elected.  The Oaklandside
