Good morning, Oakland. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 10th of April.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Goodwill San Francisco Bay plans to close its SF headquarters and its Oakland clearance center on June 7, which will lead to layoffs of 18 SF employees and 72 workers at the Oakland site—changes meant to improve operations and help the charity invest in larger, more efficient locations. Laid-off staff can apply for roles at other locations as the nonprofit works to offer better shopping and donation opportunities.  SFGate
  • Boba Guys’ Hayward factory will face rising costs from tariffs that raise fees on imported ingredients and packaging—especially for tapioca starch and bamboo straws—co-founder Andrew Chau said. The company will explore alternative sourcing to offset price hikes that could affect local bubble tea costs.  KTVU

CRIME NEWS

  • At a prayer service on Tuesday evening in Fruitvale, the family of Jesus Campos (a popular restaurant owner and community leader who was shot and killed 14 years ago during an attempted robbery) gathered to remember him while holding hope that justice will be served after no arrests have been made.  KTVU
  • After a shooting robbery on April 2nd led to the arrest of a juvenile suspect, local business owners added private security and camera coverage at the April 9th Taste of Montclair Village food event. Celebrity chef Kasem Saengsawang and other vendors supported the measures as plans for events on April 26 and May 4 will use the same safety enhancements.  KTVU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teacher Denise Ebright from St. Theresa School in Oakland was honored on Good Morning America as a Sideline Superhero after national submissions recognized her coaching success. She celebrated with her students—her son Cody and school supporters attended the watch party at the school.  ABC7
  • On April 3, the Department of Education ordered schools and public healthcare centers to remove DEI content in 10 days to keep their funding—raising alarm about free speech on college campuses. Oakland resident and Columbia alum Amissa Miller said the policy shows that universities are curtailing student voices and open debate.  East Bay Express

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • During a hearing in Oakland on April 8, State Farm asked to raise property insurance rates up to 38% — a move to rebuild capital after recent LA County fires — while it seeks higher rates for homeowners, renters, and rental dwellings. Michael Soller said Commissioner Ricardo Lara — by law — did not attend and that State Farm must provide detailed data to support its request.  ABC7
