  • Chinatown business owners in Oakland say heavy fines are straining them as they face 10 days to remove recurring graffiti—fines can reach up to $6,200 if they delay. City officials noted they are exploring options with private painters to help clear graffiti, while local groups remain frustrated with limited enforcement against vandals.  San Francisco Chronicle

  • On Tuesday morning, five alleged Zizians cult members appeared in court facing charges of murder, attempted murder, and aggravated mayhem from a 2022 attack that left one person dead; in Fairfield one defendant disrupted proceedings by yelling from her wheelchair—she was moved to an isolation booth.  SFGate
  • On March 16, a woman in a fleece jacket vandalized a Tesla Cybertruck parked at the Claremont Resort & Spa parking lot in Oakland by scratching a squiggly line on its mirror and door with the incident recorded in 40 seconds by the vehicle’s cameras.  San Francisco Chronicle

  • The Oakland Unified School District board discussed hiring an interim superintendent to replace long-serving Kyla Johnson-Trammell during a closed session meeting as part of plans for next school year. Some board members warned that an early replacement + a contract payout would disrupt district stability while the NAACP Oakland chapter urged public support in an open letter.  The Oaklandside

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oakland voters will go to the polls on April 15 to elect a new mayor after Sheng Thao was recalled in November. Interim Mayor Kevin Jenkins said the county registrar will take 30 days to count votes — and the city council will need two more weeks to certify them — so residents will learn the new leader by mid-May or early June.  KTVU
  • On Tuesday, April 8th, the California Department of Insurance held a public hearing on State Farm's request to raise premiums by 22% for homeowners, 15% for renters, and up to 38% for rental dwellings—State Farm explained the need to rebuild its capital after wildfires and faced criticism from Consumer Watchdog for not providing enough data. The judge will soon issue a recommendation for Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara to review.  KTVU
