  • Chef Albert Ok from Ok’s Deli is set to open Oken, a sit-down restaurant that serves Korean—Japanese fusion featuring dishes like samgyetang and kimchi fried rice at 6200 Claremont Ave in Oakland. He will begin hiring staff as the restaurant opens later this month.  San Francisco Chronicle

CRIME NEWS

  • Police are investigating a shooting after an attempted robbery in Oakland's Montclair neighborhood when a person was shot around 9:15 a.m. on April 2 and taken to the hospital in critical but stable condition (the suspect fled on foot).  ABC7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lake Merritt’s cherry trees are set to burst into bloom today along a stretch of Grand Avenue—only a few remain from the many trees planted decades ago to beautify the lakeshore. Their deep pink blossoms, donated by civic boosters, mark a treasured local tradition that once aimed to circle the lake with flowering trees.  The Oaklandside
  • Chef Zachary Breaux of Left On Madeline was selected as the 2025 chef in residence at Cafe Colucci on San Pablo Ave in Oakland after a mid-March tasting that narrowed 11 applicants to three finalists—he will host monthly dinners for six months to test his new Louisiana style, giving rising chefs of the African diaspora a chance to refine their skills. The residency provides full kitchen access and is supported by local partners to help fill a gap for emerging culinary talent.  The Oaklandside
  • Freaky Tales, an anthology film by Oakland filmmakers Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, celebrates 1980s Oakland culture by drawing on local history like Warriors player Sleepy Floyd’s career and punk clashes at Gilman. ECONOMY NEWS

  • On April 1, many Bay Area cities increased their sales tax rates due to new district taxes approved by voters and residents in cities like Benicia, Campbell, and Napa paid higher prices at malls and restaurants.  KTVU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Civic groups in Oakland are hosting voter forums and registration drives to boost turnout for the special mayoral election on April 15 because unusual timing and low morale have raised concerns about low participation. They noted that past races drew much fewer votes than the more than 250692 registered voters in the city.  The Oaklandside
  • On Tuesday, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors voted to use emergency funds to cover three months of rent for families with children living at the RV Park at the Fairgrounds after the end of horse racing left many without income; the county will work with Centro Legal de la Raza to negotiate payments and help these families stay in their homes.  KTVU
