COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Students in Oakland are organizing in schools and on neighborhood streets to address gun violence and safety concerns. They presented art, research, and a petition for more streetlights—hoping to improve their community’s wellbeing.  The Oaklandside
  • The Myanmar community in the East Bay held a fundraiser on Sunday at the Myanmar Community and Cultural Center in Union City to raise money and collect supplies for survivors of a 7.7 earthquake in Myanmar that killed over 1,700 people—another fundraiser will be held next Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Fremont Gurdwara to support ongoing relief efforts.  KTVU

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An SUV lost control on Interstate 580 near Fruitvale just before 3 p.m. on Sunday when it hit a tree, killing an adult passenger and injuring a minor who is expected to survive as lanes reopened shortly before 5 p.m.  KTVU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials reported that redesigned stairs in Cleveland Heights, Highland, and Lower Dimond will be nearly open today—replacing unsafe routes and offering residents quicker access to local amenities. The stairs, funded by a Transportation Development Act grant approved three years ago, will soon get added safety features as the city completes final touches.  The Oaklandside

  • Homeowners and ADU builders in the Bay Area reported long delays with PG&E, with permit reviews and engineering work extending accessory dwelling unit projects by up to nine months—slowing efforts to ease the state’s housing shortage. PG&E claims its improvements are underway even as builders say delays continue to block new projects.  San Francisco Chronicle
