Good morning, Oakland. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 29th of March.

CRIME NEWS

  • A San Francisco jury convicted 23-year-old Jose Guevara-Espinoza of robbery and carjacking for an April 16, 2022 incident on Fillmore Street when he and an accomplice forced a parked BMW owner to hand over his keys and wallet; Oakland police tracked the stolen car through swapped license plates and recovered it later, and he remains in custody awaiting sentencing.  San Francisco Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former Councilmember Loren Taylor's bid for mayor got a boost from San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan—who said Taylor is the best choice for fixing Oakland's problems—at an event in the Laurel District. Voters will choose the next mayor along with a council member and tax measure on April 15.  KTVU
  • Oakland City Council will vote next month on a plan to rename the intersection at 7th and Campbell streets as Elaine Brown Way to honor Elaine Brown (81), a former Black Panther who helped build affordable housing in West Oakland. Leaders say the new street name will recognize her long work in reviving the neighborhood.  The Oaklandside
  • Former congresswoman Barbara Lee detailed her plans to fix Oakland's budget deficit by ordering a forensic audit and raising revenue with a 0.5% sales tax on Measure A if elected mayor on April 15, and she said she will support Measure NN to fund public safety—boosting outreach for unsheltered residents with affordable and transitional housing instead of issuing citations. This plan addresses key city issues ahead of the special election.  ABC7
  • Advocates at Santa Rita Jail urged the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office to replace for-profit health care provider Wellpath with the county’s public health system before the contract expires in September—audits showed low compliance in basic care standards and more than 1,500 lawsuits have been filed nationwide over deaths and other tragedies. Wellpath defended its work by citing challenges with outdated record-keeping and low staffing, while critics argued that more reliable care would better protect incarcerated people.  The Oaklandside
