ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scientists from the California Academy of Sciences and the Presidio Trust reintroduced the Silvery Blue butterfly—a close relative of the extinct Xerces blue butterfly—to the restored coastal habitat. They have tracked the butterflies since late February (eggs from last spring might have become pupae in mid-March or may turn to adults by May) as part of efforts to revive an important pollinator.  KTVU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • West Oakland homeless shelters, including the Wood Street RV parking program and Community Cabins, will close on June 30—three months after extra funding was secured to delay their March shutdown. City officials and BOSS are working to find new housing options for the residents amid ongoing budget challenges.  The Oaklandside
  • Former AC Transit GM Michael Hursh left the agency in December to become chief operating officer at Lane Transit District in Oregon but still earns over $500k as a consultant through September. An Oakland resident sent a letter to the board threatening litigation over alleged public disclosure violations in the settlement agreement.  The Oaklandside

  • The Oakland Roots excited over 26,000 fans at the Coliseum on March 22 with tailgating, live bands and a halftime show by Too $hort as they lost 2-1 to San Antonio FC. Local officials and celebrities joined the record-setting crowd as the team marked a milestone home opener—reviving Oakland’s historic venue.  The Oaklandside
  • The 16th annual Oakland Marathon took place on March 23rd with a record 10,000 runners coming together for health and community. Organizers said the event united people with different reasons—reinforcing Oakland’s local pride.  KTVU
