BUSINESS NEWS

  • Perle, a French and Mediterranean-inspired wine bar in Oakland, announced it will close on March 31 after eight years of service amid pandemic-induced economic challenges — compounded by the departure of the city's three professional sports teams. Upstairs, a listening lounge above Snail Bar at 4935 Shattuck Ave shut its doors on March 13 when Oakland officials issued a cease and desist order for unlicensed entertainment — and it plans to reopen after making improvements.  The Oaklandside

CRIME NEWS

  • Darrell Wayne 'Dirty Dick' Smith, a former FCI Dublin officer, is on trial in Oakland for alleged sex crimes including dressing as a cowboy, spanking inmates, and using threats—witnesses told the court these acts abused their power—while his lawyers say there is no physical proof.  KTVU
  • An East Bay man was convicted for multiple carjackings, burglary, first-degree robbery, a shooting at an occupied vehicle and other charges from a September 2023 crime spree and now faces 100 years to life due to prior strike convictions (sentencing is set for May 29) after being booked at Monterey County Jail.  KTVU

  • At the Grand Lake Theatre in Oakland on March 19, the film Freaky Tales held its star-studded premiere with appearances by Pedro Pascal, Jay Ellis, and Too Short. The movie—filmed mostly in Oakland and Berkeley—will open nationwide on April 4.  The Oaklandside

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Interim Mayor Kevin Jenkins hired deputy mayors LaNiece Jones and Burt Jones to manage his office while he prepares the two-year budget starting July 1—Oakland voters will elect a permanent mayor on April 15.  The Oaklandside
  • Commissioner Riccardo Lara testified before the State Assembly Insurance Committee on March 19 in Oakland about the home insurance crisis and said he will hold State Farm accountable at an April 8 hearing—demanding hard data to justify any rate hike. He added that a report on insurance rates will be issued in the coming months and he expects rates to stabilize by the end of 2026—supporting more mitigation efforts as part of his reforms.  KTVU
