  • Oakland will host a free rally at Frank H. Ogawa Plaza on March 12 to honor Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu, who won gold in both the women’s individual and team figure skating events (it runs from noon to 1:30 p.m. with two free tickets per person).  SFGate

  • The Grand Lake Theater is marking its 100th anniversary this week with free classic film screenings including Fantasia, Snow White, Singin' in the Rain, and Wizard of Oz + guided tours planned for today, Saturday, and Sunday at this local landmark.  KTVU

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Global oil delays from the closed Strait of Hormuz are pushing gas prices up in the Bay Area, with prices already rising 35 cents above normal. Local experts warn that if disruptions persist, prices may reach about $6 a gallon, affecting Oakland commuters (current average is $4.83).  KTVU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Oakland Voices Director Rasheed Shabazz was selected as one of 10 nationwide for the 2026 Ida B. Wells Investigative Reporting Fellowship. He will study Oakland’s homelessness policies and boost his investigative skills during the six-month program (training began on Feb. 22 in Atlanta).  Oakland Voices

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, Mar. 4, a 3.1-magnitude earthquake struck Mercuryville north of Santa Rosa with no damage reported. The quake occurred at 8:23 p.m. and came after several small tremors noted by the USGS (experts suggest residents review their earthquake plans).  KTVU
