  • Earlier this season, Oakland's restaurants featured matsutake mushrooms in creative dishes—lower prices allowed chefs to experiment with soups, grilled entrees, and pickled options. Chefs say the prized ingredient added a unique, pine-scented flavor to menus.  San Francisco Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A city-funded pilot violence prevention program is helping reduce suspensions and chronic absenteeism at Oakland high schools, but funding will end in June (details pending) with no clear plan for new sources. Educators and officials worry that losing the program could impact school safety if alternative funds are not secured.  The Oaklandside

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents saw snow covering local peaks on Wednesday (Mount Hamilton, Mount Diablo) as a cold storm passed over the Bay Area, and additional snow may fall later today in Marin and East Bay hills.  San Francisco Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Oaklandside was honored with the Freedom of Information award by SPJ NorCal for revealing that many city councilmembers delayed or ignored public records requests, challenging government transparency and press freedom. This recognition spotlights their ongoing commitment to upholding the California Public Records Act.  The Oaklandside
  • On Tuesday, City Council approved $843,875 from Measure DD for the indigenous Sogorea Te’ Land Trust to buy a 16-acre property at Sausal Creek’s headwaters in Piedmont Pines (Blachford Court area). The trust will steward the land for conservation and habitat restoration for future generations.  The Oaklandside
