CULTURE NEWS

  • Betty Reid Soskin, a cherished Bay Area historian and former park ranger, will be honored in a free celebration at Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts in Oakland on March 1 — the event will feature recordings of her original songs and tributes from friends.  San Francisco Chronicle
  • Australian band Tame Impala announced its North American tour on Feb. 12 (it starts July 7 in Miami and ends Sept. 19 in Houston) with no California dates and an August break, prompting fans to speculate about a headline return at Outside Lands.  San Francisco Chronicle
  • Oakland-born rapper MC Hammer surprised San Francisco cable car riders on Thursday, Feb. 12 with dance moves and selfies. A 19-second clip captured him chatting with fans and dancing near an SFMTA worker while wearing a black beanie, sunglasses, and a Canadian tuxedo.  San Francisco Chronicle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • California mountain lions received permanent protections under the endangered species act after a Thursday vote by the Fish and Game Commission; the protections make it illegal to harm the species in areas including the Santa Cruz and Santa Monica mountains (a key win after years of advocacy).  SFGate

  • The Oakland Department of Transportation will begin community outreach for plans to rebuild 18th Street in West Oakland this summer by adding crosswalks, buffered bikeways, and pedestrian islands — a safety project funded by an affordable housing and sustainable communities grant.  The Oaklandside

  • Multiplatinum rapper E-40 joined the ownership group of Oakland Roots & Oakland Soul soccer clubs on Feb. 13, joining an investment group that includes Marshawn Lynch. He will perform at their home opener on March 14 to boost local fan engagement.  San Francisco Chronicle
