CULTURE NEWS

  • The Oakland Asian Cultural Center held a free Lunar New Year x Black History Month festival on Feb. 7 that featured lion dances, drumming + cultural performances to build Asian and Black solidarity. Children and teens enjoyed storytime and a dedicated teen zone during the event.  Oakland Voices
  • Oakland residents can look forward to a vibrant weekend of events as the Trash Falcons exhibit What We Sow opens tomorrow at the Junior Center of Art and Science plus a Black Liberation walking tour on Saturday and a film on the Black Joy Parade screening at OMCA on Sunday.  The Oaklandside
  • Oakland's Grand Lake Theatre hosted NBA star Stephen Curry as he introduced his animated film Goat, a family project set to open in theaters tomorrow.   • Oakland comedian W. Kamau Bell mocked Kid Rock's alternative halftime show for Turning Point USA as he said he watched it for laughs and contrasted it with Bad Bunny's live performance. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former NFL players led workshops on leadership, financial literacy, mental health, and social justice for 100 Skyline High and Laney students at a Feb. 5 event by the Coach Beam Legacy Foundation in Oakland (honoring late coach Beam). GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Data shows that over 6 million BART trips—one in eight rides last year—ended at stations at risk of closing if voters reject the transit sales tax in November. BART officials plan to start targeted cuts next January with further closures in July if deficits persist.  San Francisco Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Flu season remains intense in the Bay Area with nearly 19% of tests positive and rising influenza B cases that may spark a new wave. Health officials advise residents to get vaccinated and take extra precautions after large gatherings.  SFGate

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Mandela Station is a 240-unit affordable housing project that will break ground in May on BART-owned land at West Oakland station. The development includes 60 units for the homeless and is funded through federal tax credits, local bonds, and Measure U funds.  San Francisco Chronicle

  • Chronicle photographer Scott Strazzante explained his approach to capturing a unique low-angle shot of the Lombardi Trophy during Super Bowl 50 at Levi's Stadium in 2016.
