  • A large fire broke out early Tuesday morning in a Berkeley warehouse near the Gillman exit, where firefighters sprayed water & contained the blaze as they worked to secure the former Pacific Steel Casting facility.  KTVU

  • On Jan. 24, entrepreneur Tyranny Allen — also known for launching Lucky's Barber Shops — opened the second Winky Dinky Dogs location at the iconic triangular building on Telegraph Ave, reviving a historic space with hot dogs, ribs, and an outdoor grill for eager patrons.  The Oaklandside
  • Mr. Espresso has shaped Bay Area coffee culture for over 40 years and now expands its legacy with the new Café by Mr. Espresso in Oakland. The family-owned business supplies high-quality espresso machines + fire-roasted beans to local cafés and restaurants.  ABC7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Two events are starting this week in Oakland: the historic Grand Lake Theater presents a second run of 'Sinners' in 70mm from Friday, Jan. 30 to Thursday, Feb. 5, and the OMCA White Elephant Sale begins at Jingletown on Thursday, Jan. 29 with vintage finds until Feb. 21.  The Oaklandside
  • It’s All Good Bakery closed its doors Sunday after nearly 30 years serving Oakland with family recipes and popular desserts. The bakery, housed at 5622 Martin Luther King Junior Way — once Oakland’s Black Panthers headquarters — remains a historic landmark as details on the planned mixed-use redevelopment remain unclear.  KTVU
  • Lyz Luke, an experienced arts advocate, is Oakland’s new cultural affairs manager who will start on March 2 — her role includes securing external funding and guiding the Cultural Affairs Commission.  The Oaklandside
  • Chabot Space & Science Center is hosting Sci-Fi Nights in its full-dome planetarium with a sold-out Blade Runner screening and two future events: The Fifth Element on Valentine's Day and Alien on March 19, with raffles, light bites & themed cocktails to add fun after the film.  KTVU
  • Obelisco reopens as a home-style Mexican restaurant in Oakland’s Lakeshore neighborhood. Owner Leticia Chávez serves classic stews made from her family’s recipes + plans to add a wood-fired oven for smoky flavor while honoring her Fruitvale roots.  San Francisco Chronicle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • TomTom data shows SF downtown traffic slowed to 12.6 mph, increasing drive times nearly 50% from free-flowing conditions. Oakland driver (Kurtis Bass) said his commute now takes 15 minutes longer, which may push him to try public transit.  San Francisco Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The US Department of the Interior approved the Sites Reservoir project — the state's largest in decades — to store 1.5 million acre-ft from the Sacramento River for 24 million people. Construction will start late 2026 and finish by end of 2032 with federal and Proposition 1 funds.  SFGate
