- ➤ On Friday, Jan. 23, the Oakland Zoo announced it euthanized Lola (estimated 12 years old) after a severe infection spread from her injured front paw. Staff said the decision came after multiple antibiotics failed to stop the advancing infection. KTVU
- ➤ A fire at 1770 Broadway Monday displaced 53 residents, with three hospitalized, and tenants raised safety concerns about an alleged e-scooter chop shop operating for years. The city emergency shelter set up for those affected will close Saturday, and tenants will meet with officials for housing & legal help. The Oaklandside

- ➤ Oakland native Ryan Coogler’s film (Sinners) earned a record 16 Oscar nominations including Best Director, and the city celebrates with screenings at Grand Lake Theatre starting Friday. The film will show digitally this week and in 70 mm next week. ABC7
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ City officials and nonprofits are set to remove more than 40 sunken vessels in the estuary using a $3 million grant from NOAA Marine Debris Program. The cleanup will start soon with marine salvage and volunteer events, and one volunteer day is scheduled today at Jack London Aquatic Center. ABC7
